A Film Junkie’s Quick Guide: Dune Reboot

Everything we know so far

We have seen the new Game of Thrones teaser trailer come up and we are very excited, but what’s gonna happen when GoT ends? It will be hard to top the grandiosity and worldbuilding that series has done and I’m sure that fans will be wanting more. But drag GoT on any further and It will just dampen the franchise. So what can we expect in the near future? Why Dune of course!

For the younger folks here, Dune is a 1960s science fiction epic that was massively popular in its day. To this day, it still has a wide following and continues to draw in fans with its impressively made universe. The books follow the struggles and intrigues between house Atreides, Shaddam, Harkonnen, the Fremen and many more and their conflicts over the resource known as “spice”. Dune has spawned a few video games, and a well-known 80s film adaptation that was the worst of its kind.

David Lynch didn’t get Dune even remotely right. it had a massive (in 80s terms) $40 million budget and It took over a decade to bring the movie to the screen. By all means was it a critical failure and flopped so hard. It was a total mess, with critics saying it was an “incomprehensible, ugly, unstructured, pointless excursion into the murkier realms of one of the most confusing screenplays of all time.” Even an original soundtrack by Toto and Brian Eno couldn’t redeem it. It badly needed a Dune reboot.

30 years later we finally have something. Old and new fans alike have recently rejoiced when they found out that a Dune reboot was coming with Legendary Pictures producing and Denis Villeneuve at the helm. Sci Fi geeks know him as the director of one of the greatest sci-fi film remakes of all time, Blade Runner 2047.

Dune has a massive universe with so many characters that can put Game Of Thrones to shame, so whos going to be in it? So far we know that the Dune reboot will include the rising star Timothee Chalamet playing Paul Atreides, Rebecca Ferguson for one of the female leads, Guardians Of The Galaxy’s Dave Bautista with an undisclosed role and the veteran Stellan Skasgård to play as Baron Harkonnen. There’s also talks of Star Wars’ Oscar Isaac playing Duke Leto and Spider-Man: Far from Home’s Zendaya playing the wild warrior Chani.

The Dune reboot is rumoured to start production next month, while targeting a 2020 release date.
