A Tribute to the Demigod of Football, Diego Maradona

One of the most admired football legends, Diego Maradona, has died at 60 years of age due to a heart attack he suffered when he was at home. Only two weeks before, he had left the hospital after having brain surgery. As soon as the World Cup winner had the heart attack, paramedics were called to his home, but their attempts to resuscitate him were futile.

Diego Maradona professional career started in 1976 with Argentinos Juniors, and then he switched to Boca Juniors. In 1982, he joined Barcelona and two years after that, he was transferred to Napoli. At that time, his transfer fees were world records. He captained his country to victory in 1986 and is renowned as the greatest player of all time.

People love Diego Maradona for his amazing ball-handling skills and creativity on the pitch. His Hand of God is also quite famous among football lovers. Sadly, his career was adversely affected due to his cocaine addiction.

After Diego Maradona’s playing career ended, he took up management roles which included a coaching stint when he coached the national team of Argentina. He also coached Mexican team Dorados de Dinaloa. People also cannot forget Diego Maradona’s habit of referring to himself in the third person and his politically themed tattoos.

Diego Maradona’s journey has also been inspiring as he was one of eight children in a family that faced desperate poverty and lived in the slums of Buenos Aires. He worked his way to fame and riches in a time that was tough for all who lived in Napoli, a city that was struggling with mafia control and economic desperation.

Since the news of Diego Maradona death was reported, there has been an outpouring of emotion as people paid their respects to the legend and shared memories of his fabulous career. Former Barcelona and England striker Gary Lineker said: “By some distance the best player of my generation and arguably the greatest of all time. After a blessed but troubled life, hopefully he’ll finally find some comfort in the hands of God. #RipDiego.”

Usain Bolt posted “RIP to legend” while Marcus Rashford shared a photo of the legend and wrote, “Legendary” in the caption. Boca Juniors also posted his photo and captioned “Eternal thanks. Eternal Diego.” A spokesperson for Napoli paid tribute to Diego Maradona by saying “Always in our hearts. Ciao, Diego.” We pay our tribute to the legend as well. Rest in peace.
