Spider-Man – Marvel – Sony

Tony Stark once said, “Peace in Our Time.” Marvel and Sony Pictures have made it real. As many of the Marvel fans would know, Spider-Man exited MCU after the Marvel and Sony quarrelled about finances and broke up the partnership. The pleas of fans have been heard as Spider-Man will re-join MCU. Read on for all the details.

On Friday, Marvel and Sony Pictures jointly announced that Kevin Fiege, the man behind MCU success would produce the third film in Spider-Man franchise series. The second film in the series was Spider-Man: Far from Home and it was an immense success. It will feature Tom Holland reprising his role as Spider-Man.

Fans who were sad about not seeing Captain America, Iron Man and Spider-Man after Avengers: Endgame were delighted after this announcement. A new deal was signed late on Thursday night according to which in exchange for lending Feige’s producing capabilities, Disney and Marvel will receive 25 percent of the profits. Disney will put up a quarter of financing and would retain merchandising rights. As a part of this agreement, Spider-Man will feature in one future film of the Marvel studios that will probably be released in July 2021 and might be a part of MCU Phase 4. Amy Pascal will also produce through her Pascal Pictures just as she did on previous Holland-led Spider-Man films.

Feige stated “I am thrilled that Spidey’s journey in the MCU will continue, and I and all of us at Marvel Studios are very excited that we get to keep working on it. Spider-Man is a powerful icon and hero whose story crosses all ages and audiences around the globe. He also happens to be the only hero with the superpower to cross cinematic universes, so as Sony continues to develop their own Spidey-verse you never know what surprises the future might hold.”

Pascal seemed delighted when she stated, “This is terrific, Peter Parker’s story took a dramatic turn in ‘Far from Home,’ and I could not be happier we will all be working together as we see where his journey goes.”

Marvel and Sony have had a very long relationship. Marvel licensed the rights to Spider-Man to Sony for about two decades. They had an agreement before Disney’s acquisition of the comics company in 2009. Sony received and critical acclaim with the first-round of Spider-Man films that starred Tobey Maguire and were directed by Sam Raimi. The second effort starring Andrew Garfield and directed by Marc Webb wasn’t as successful.

The studio was able to get the success of the first series by bringing Feige and Marvel back into the fold. The inclusion of Spider-Man in the Avengers movies also helped the web-slinger becoming a fan-favourite again.

Robert Lawson, the Chief Communications Officer for Sony, stated, “We have had a great collaboration over the last four years, and our mutual desire to continue was equal to that of the many fans. We are delighted to be moving forward together.”

Holland, like all Spider-Man fans is delighted by the news. He shared a clip from The Wolf of Wall Street on his Instagram account. In the clip, Leonardo DiCaprio’s Jordan Belfort declares, “I’m not leaving!” It is a reference to the fact that his character won’t be leaving the MCU for now.
