The coronavirus situation seems to be getting worse from bad as new cases are popping up every day. With 18 new cases in the last 24 hours, the situation is getting worse in NSW, and the possibility of NSW lockdown is being considered by the Premier, Glady Berejiklian.

While talking to media, Berejiklian said that if NSW lockdown happens, they will lockdown the entire city rather than postcode by postcode basis, a method that failed to contain the outbreak in Melbourne. So, if the NSW lockdown happens, it will put the whole of the greater Sydney area as a whole at the same time.

Berejiklian said “We have watched closely what has happened in New Zealand and Victoria. We are very much in control of the spread of the virus. We don’t want to go down that path. We have tested various scenarios.”

She added, “Without passing any judgement or commentary, and I think about the Premier of Victoria every day, the pressure they are under, but it seems apparent that any future scenario would involve cities rather than postcodes or local government areas.”

NSW Health Minister Brad Hazzard has also urged Sydneysiders to wear a face mask when social distancing is not possible to help avoid NSW lockdown (but it is not mandatory yet). He said “If you’re on public transport, you really should be wearing a mask. We’re not making it mandatory at this stage, but we’re certainly saying to the community, wear a mask. If you’re in the shopping centres, wear a mask. If you go to church, or a place of worship, wear a mask. It’s not a matter of actually asking whether it’s ok to do it, it’s a case of just do it.”

Various other health experts are also suggesting measures that might help contain the coronavirus situation and avoid NSW lockdown. Dr Gregory Dore, the Program Head at Kirby Institute believes that tougher restrictions concerning gatherings at home should be implemented to ensure NSW achieves Zero Community Transmission.

In a nutshell, NSW lockdown is a possibility shortly. The state has 297 active cases of coronavirus, which is huge given the fact it reported just 5 cases on July 9th. As New Zealand has also reported new cases after bringing down the number to zero, it seems that only COVID vaccine can put an end to this madness.
