Australians Could Soon be Required Digital COVID-19 Vaccine Certificates

The Australian government is planning to ensure that every person in the country who gets a COVID-19 vaccine shot also has proof of it. This will be done via an international digital certificate of COVID-19 vaccination that will indicate that the person who has it has been vaccinated against the COVID-19 disease.

COVID-19 vaccine certificates

The certificates would be available on all the government apps like MyGov or Express Medicare present on a person’s smartphone.  A user can use the digital certificates to access facilities that need vaccines such as hospitals and aged care homes in the current form. In the future, Aussies might need the digital certificate of the COVID-19 vaccine to travel to a different state or country during lockdowns.

If someone needs a hard copy of the COVID-19 vaccine certificate, they can collect it from Services Australia or vaccine service providers.

COVID-19 vaccine certificate government project

The project is headed by the Government Services Minister Stuart Robert and Health Minister Greg Hunt. Talking about the project, Minister Robert said: “Any requirement for borders to open up will require vaccination, and it will require the widespread use of assured certificates, and that is what we are talking about today – the Australian assured certificate that Australians can have enormous confidence in.”

Anthony Albanese, the Opposition leader, wasn’t in favour of the digital proof of the COVID-19 vaccine shot as the government didn’t perform well previously. He said “We know that they didn’t get the [COVIDSafe] tracing app right. So, they need to, as the rollout of the vaccine occurs, make sure that they absolutely get it right because our economy, as well as our health, depends on it.”

The cabinet needs to approve the proposal of digital proof of the COVID-19 vaccine. It might be done in the next two weeks. Meanwhile, the Pfizer vaccine’s rollout is due at the end of this month while the rollout of AstraZeneca is due the next month. All eyes are on the government as COVID-19 vaccine drive is a crucial process that shouldn’t involve any mistakes or blunders from anyone involved in the process.
