Though the music industry, especially the live entertainment options are deeply impacted by the coronavirus pandemic, the recorded music and music publishing have succeeded at getting all the attention. The latest update in this regard is the popping up of reports that claim Calvin Harris has sold his song catalogue for USD 100 (about AUD 140) million.

Vine Alternative Investments has confirmed the deal on Thursday but did not divulge the pricing details. The company has acquired the entire song catalogue of Calvin Harris, a multi-platinum producer, artist, a DJ, and a songwriter. It includes over 150 songs and collaborations with Sam Smith, Rihanna, Dua Lipa, Travis Scott, Frank Ocean, Big Sean, Ariana Grande, Pharrell Williams, and many others. The administration services for Calvin Harris’ catalogue would be provided by Sony/ATV.

This acquisition is something worth mentioning as it is in line with the aggressive move of Hipgnosis Songs into the industry in the last two years. The company has spent over USD 1 (about AUD 1.40) billion on catalogues since the middle of 2018. It is announcing numerous new acquisitions per month since then.

The CEO and Manager of Calvin Harris talked about the deal by saying “Vine’s process was extremely smooth. We valued their quick response time, exceptional knowledge of the space and straight-forward approach. We are very comfortable that they will be great stewards of the catalogue.”

Speaking about the deal, Rob Amir, Vine’s partner in charge of music sector investments said “We approach the music space the same way we have always approached the film and TV space, with an eye for and an appreciation of, the world’s most iconic content. The addition of Calvin Harris hits across multiple genres to our catalogues is a continuation of our pursuit of building a multi-genre media ecosystem that not only respects, but honours the artists we partner with.”

This deal is a win-win for Vine and Calvin Harris who has more than 30 billion streams, 37,550,502 monthly listens on Spotify, and has established himself as a chart-topping fixture on almost all the radio stations across the globe.
