"Can't

Indeed, sleep is essential for the proper functioning of the body’s organs. According to W. Chris Winter, a sleep specialist, “Outside of bacon and sex, sleep is the most important thing on the planet.” However, some people cannot sleep properly at night despite doing everything right.

Can’t sleep?

If you are among those who cannot sleep properly despite regularly exercising, maintaining a schedule, and avoiding caffeine, there’s some news for you. According to Dr. Winter, the main thing that differentiates insomnia from a lack of sleep is the anxiety that comes in.

Apparently, missing a day’s sleep may not be a big problem. However, if your sleep is not enough despite trying for days, then that is certainly a problem.

The first step is to just enjoy the process of resting. This involves letting go of all your worries when you go to bed. In this regard, some relaxing activities such as meditation just before sleeping can help. Similarly, some people who have sleeping problems find relief from scented candles that help calm their minds.

Secondly, staying away from the screen just before bedtime is also extremely important. One of the reasons why people can’t sleep for hours in bed is high exposure to screens. The electronic devices emit bright blue light that activates the fight and flight centre of the brain.

This makes it difficult for the brain to produce melatonin, which is a hormone essential for regulating the sleep and wake cycle. Another important thing to remember is that the bed should only be used for sleeping. This way, the mind will associate it with resting, and hence, you will find it easier to sleep.

Furthermore, doctors suggest getting out of bed when you cannot sleep in 20 minutes. In that case, just walk around for 5 minutes before getting into the bed again. Or perhaps, read something for about 10 minutes.

In the end, remember that you are not alone. Many adults who finds it difficult to sleep require additional techniques to get enough rest. Regarding this, Dr. Winter says, “Being in bed and not falling asleep right away, or awakening during the night, to me, is not horrible. It’s not even difficult. It just is.”
