After news of Cristiano Ronaldo returning to Manchester United broke out, football fans worldwide went into a frenzy. Amidst all the hype, the club began making profits after selling a massive number of the legendary number 7 jersey.

Currently, the Ronaldo jersey is available for pre-ordering through the official web store of the club. For just $31 per piece, the total sales of the jersey have surpassed almost US$259 million after Manchester United confirmed that Ronaldo would wear the number 7 again (just like old times).

According to some figures, the Cristiano Ronaldo jersey sales surpassed $45 million within 12 hours of the announcement. Furthermore, data suggest that Ronaldo’s shirts are selling at a 2x faster rate compared to Messi’s PSG jersey.

For instance, several official retailers of Manchester United are out of supplies already. The high sales may not have much to do with the looks of the jersey. Instead, it is all about the hype around the return of Cristiano Ronaldo.

Of course, Messi’s jersey has also made a good number of sales. Numbers say that PSG has received US$144 million in revenue from the sale of Messi’s shirts. However, Ronaldo’s jerseys surpass Messi’s figures by a significant margin.

These numbers are not officially verified. Instead, they have been approximated by tracking sales, according to Stuart McClure, the Co-Founder of LoveTheSales. However, these figures are not surprising at all.

After all, Cristiano Ronaldo has a track record for stirring markets and bringing significant profits to the team he joins. The buzz further gets amplified by the enthusiastic fans on social media platforms such as Twitter and Instagram.

Man Utd is obviously reaping the benefits. Given that Man Utd paid about £12.9 million (US$18 million) to get Ronaldo, the football club has made more than the amount they paid for the deal, even it pays Ronaldo’s £26.52 million salary ($36.6 million).

Just recently, the official Manchester United account on Twitter tweeted, “it had to be him,” which looks like it is about Cristiano Ronaldo concerning the high jersey sales.
