Daniel Craig, who has played the role of James Bond multiple times, recently said that a female should not play the role of the iconic role. For years, the role of James Bond has been portrayed on screen as a white male. So, people were wondering whether a person of colour or a woman should play the role next.

In a recent interview, Daniel Craig was asked whether a more diverse version of James Bond was needed. He said that he doesn’t see the need for a woman to play this character. He explained by saying that filmmakers should focus on creating new and different female roles, which are just as interesting as James Bond. He said there should be better parts available for women and actors of colour.

Daniel Craig said, “The answer to that is very simple… There should simply be better parts for women and actors of colour. Why should a woman play James Bond when there should be a part just as good as James Bond, but for a woman?”

When Daniel Craig was signed to play the iconic character back in 2006’s Casino Royale, he also faced backlash. The reason for the opposition were Daniel Craig’s hair colour, height, and stature. Soon after, the critics were so impressed by his performance as 007 that they stopped the negativity.

The idea of updating James Bond to ensure that the character was aligned with modern audiences isn’t new. His behaviour has changed from the brazen sexism shown by Roger Moore and Sean Connery. Also in Pierce Brosnan’s outing in 1995, Judi Dench M referred to 007 as a “sexist, misogynist dinosaur, a relic of the cold war.”

But for the question of who should or could play James Bond is a bigger and more important one. In the trailer of No Time To Die, Lashana Lynch becomes the first Black female 007. She inherits the position as Bond resigns from the British Secret Service. It will be interesting to see how producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson will cast the next James Bond.
