Denzel Washington’s Training Day Prequel Coming Soon?

We’re hoping this movie will be impressive as the first

Denzel Washington’s Training Day Prequel Coming Soon?
Training Day – Village Roadshow Pictures

Warner Bros. is coming up with a prequel on the 20th anniversary of Training Day that will pull the curtain back on the past of two LAPD officers. Alonzo Harris (Denzel Washington) and Jake Hoyt (Ethan Hawke) worked with each other for the first time but gradually deteriorated their new partnership.

Black list writer Nick Yarborough was tapped to write this Training Day prequel, which would take place almost a decade before the events of the original movie. To be specific, in late April
1992, two days before the conviction of Rodney King was handed down, sparking multiple protests around Los Angeles for almost a week.

The Training Day prequel will follow a younger version of Alonzo Harris, a career-defining role that brought Denzel Washington his second Oscar, and earning a Golden Globe nomination in the same category. The original film also saw Ethan Hawke nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his turn as a rookie narcotics detective Jake Hoyt. Antoine Fuqua directed from a script by David Ayer, and the film went on to gross more than $104.5 million worldwide off a $45 million budget.

Collider mentioned in its report that the Training Day prequel is “still in the very early stages,” so no director is attached yet. It is also unclear whether it would include Antoine Fuqua, David Ayer or producer Jeffrey Silver.

The actor who would play the younger Alonzo Harris should be approximately 37 years old in the prequel, Denzel Washington was 46 years old when Training Day came out. Denzel Washington’s son, John David Washington, is currently 35 years old, and he sounds just like his father. it’s safe to assume they’d go to the younger Washington first, but to be clear, he is not attached at this time, and may not even want to play the part. It will be daunting to follow the footsteps of Denzel’s acting which earned him an Oscar and that goes for any actor.

It does not necessarily mean that if the plot of Training Day is being written production will follow. In the movie world a lot of projects have been announced but it never went into fruition. Still considering how well-received Training Day was in 2001 the possibilities are strong that a young Denzel Washington will be scouring LA streets soon.
