Elon Musk can’t seem to get away from his title as the “Dogefather” of Dogecoin. SpaceX has now partnered with Canadian engineering firm Geometric Energy Corporation to launch DOGE-1, a cubesat, to the Moon. Planned to take place in the first quarter of 2022, the Moon satellite that will be launched aboard the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket will be entirely funded by the cryptocurrency, Dogecoin.

Once in space, the 40-kilogram cubesat is meant to collect “lunar-spatial intelligence” utlizing a combination of cameras and sensors onboard with “integrated communications and computational systems.”

The Geometric Energy Corporation states that the DOGE-1 cubesat will become the first commercial lunar payload that will be exclusively paid in cryptocurrency. The Vice President of Commercial Sales of SpaceX, Tom Ochinero, also stated that the Dogecoin-funded space mission could prove the viability of the developing cryptocurrency as the “foundation for interplanetary commerce.”

And The CEO of Geometric Energy Corporation says the transaction “solidified DOGE as a unit of account for lunar business in the space sector.” The press release even goes on to say that the Dogecoin crpto is “sophisticated enough to finance a commercial Moon mission in full” and that it’ll be used for all lunar business between the two companies. (Elon Musk’s other company, Tesla, recently started accepting Bitcoin for car purchases.)

So if everything goes well, Dogecoin will help send the DOGE-1 cubesat to the Moon next year. Will this space endeavour succeed? Logically speaking, it probably depends on how much the parties are involved to continue the lunar project. As Elon Musk’s SNL character admits, “Yeah, it’s a hustle.”
