Elon Musk is now officially the world’s richest person with a net worth of US$ 230 billion (approx. AU$ 308 billion). It is more than the combined net worth of Warren Buffet and Bill Gates. According to Bloomberg’s Billionaires Index, Gates is in fourth place and has a net worth of US$ 130 billion, while Buffet is in tenth place with US$ 102 billion. Both of them were named as the world’s richest people in the past.

Elon Musk, the world’s richest person.

In January, the CEO of Amazon, Jeff Bezos, was the world’s richest man and has held the title since 2017. He has been thwarted by Elon Musk now, whose net worth is US$ 191 billion. Bezos is still the second richest person on the planet. One of the key success factors of Elon Musk is that he added US$ 60 billion to his fortune this year alone, thanks to the strong performance of Tesla stock. Another reason for the wealth increase with a share sale at SpaceX that valued the company at US$ 100 billion and added US$ 11 billion to Elon Musk’s net worth.

Buffet and Gates have garnered a lot of appreciation for giving away their wealth for charitable causes and donated tens of billions of dollars for such causes. In contrast, Elon Musk has been criticized for not sharing enough money for good causes.

Although, earlier this year, he pledged to give away US$ 150 million in a carbon removal contest. He grew up in South Africa and moved to Canada when he was 17 and then to California, where he founded a number of software and banking companies. One of those companies was merged to become PayPal. In the early 2000s, he formed an aerospace manufacturing company SpaceX and an electric vehicle company Tesla Motors. He still reigns over both of them.

Though Elon Musk has many fans, he has faced criticism due to his unorthodox stance on issues like cryptocurrency, artificial intelligence, and even the origins of COVID-19.

Earlier, he revealed he has Asperger Syndrome and poked fun at his own eccentricities and sometimes bizarre tweets.

He also justified his actions back in May while guest-hosting Saturday Night Live: “Look I know I sometimes say or post strange things but that’s just how my brain works.

“To anyone I’ve offended, I just want to say, I reinvented electric cars and I’m sending humans to Mars on a rocket ship.

“Did you also think I was going to be a chill, normal dude?”
