Sharing the info, Zuckerberg said, “Looking ahead here, the next product release will be the launch of our first smart glasses from Ray-Ban in partnership with EssilorLuxottica. The glasses have their iconic form factor, and they let you do some pretty neat things.”

To keep the buzz going, Zuckerberg didn’t share what the neat things he was referring to. Facebook has previously confirmed that the smart glasses will not have an integrated display, and they won’t be classified as AR devices.

It is likely that as Facebook’s smart glasses don’t have an integrated display, they will rely on a smartphone app for control. The launch of these glasses is a part of Facebook’s “journey towards full augmented reality glasses in the future.” Zuckerberg’s company had been working on such a device for a while now, and the efforts are put in by the Project Aria research unit.

Smart glasses are also a key component in Facebook’s plans to build the “metaverse.” It’s a multi-modal technology platform that will likely blend virtual and physical spaces. It would probably be used for work, shopping, and socializing. Facebook will also use it to sell more ads. Highlighting the same, Zuckerberg said, “[A]ds are going to continue being an important part of the strategy across the social media parts of what we do, and it will probably be a meaningful part of the metaverse too.”

Facebook’s smart glasses have created a buzz online, but the brand would do well to remember that it will face stiff competition. Apple is working on smart glasses and mixed reality headsets. Even Samsung and Oppo are working on smart glasses. Google and Microsoft are ahead in the smart glasses game as they have been making AR glasses and headsets for years and already have a good grip on the market.

Besides smart glasses, Facebook is also working on smartwatches. In other news, have you had a look at McLaren 765LT Spider yet?
