A Game of Thrones prequel, House of the Dragon is in the works, and the production of the show will begin in 2021. It was confirmed via a tweet posted by the official Twitter account of GOT.

The tweet read: “Dragons are coming. #HouseoftheDragon begins production in 2021.” The series will be based on Fire and Blood by George R.R. Martin, and it will be set about 300 years before the events of the original Game of Thrones series. House of the Dragon will be shot mostly in England.

In addition to the tweet, the first look of the show was shared by Jason Kilar, the CEO of Warner Media. It was shared as a part of a blog that explained why Warner Bros decided to debut all its films released in 2021 on HBO Max at the same time the films open in cinemas. It read, “Principal photography starts on the next ‘Game of Thrones’ series, ‘House of the Dragon,’ in a few months.”

A spokesperson from HBO has stated that the Game of Thrones prequel will be shot at Leavesden Studios in Watford that is in the north of London. Miguel Sapochnik will direct the show. He was behind two amazing episodes of Game of Thrones series, ‘Battle of the Bastards’ and ‘The Long Night’.

The full cast of the show has not been revealed yet, but the prequel will have Paddy Considine starring as King Viserys Targaryen, as shared in October by HBO. The statement read “Paddy Considine (HBO’s The Third Day and The Outsider) will be playing King Viserys Targaryen. Viserys was chosen by the lords of Westeros to succeed the Old King, Jaehaerys Targaryen, at the Great Council at Harrenhal. A warm, kind, and decent man, Viserys only wishes to carry forward his grandfather’s legacy, but as we’ve learned from Game of Thrones, good men do not necessarily make for great kings.”

Talking about the prequel, Casey Bloys, who serves as the President of Programming at HBO, previously stated “The Game of Thrones universe is so rich with stories. We look forward to exploring the origins of House Targaryen and the earlier days of Westeros along with Miguel, Ryan [co-creator Ryan Condal] and George.”

When adapting the novel, HBO must take extra care and change things as per the current style and tone. Rest assured that the contents of Fire and Blood are thrilling so people who are missing the Game of Thrones magic might re-live the same thrill again if HBO does it right and doesn’t repeat the mistakes of the final season of GOT.
