Netflix has recently announced an adaptation of the Hugo-winning sci-fi story The Three-Body Problem by Liu Cixin. The Game of Thrones duo, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are serving as showrunners working alongside executive producer Rian Johnson (Knives Out and Star Wars: The Last Jedi). The Three-Body Problem is set to be Netflix’s latest sci-fi series arriving on the platform after the cancellation of its flagship sci-fi Original series Altered Carbon. The sci-fi show was initially rumored to release on Amazon Prime Video but apparently, it has been picked up by Netflix instead.

In a shared statement released, Game of Thrones showrunners said they’re excited to spend “the next years of our lives” working on the Netflix series, alluding that the project will contain multiple seasons. The Three-Body Problem features the story of the first contact of humanity with an alien civilization. The sci-fi series also has Alexander Woo as executive producer in addition to Rosamund Pike, Ram Bergman and Robie Uniacke.

“It’s a privilege to be adapting one of the great masterpieces of Chinese science-fiction,” Woo said. “The Three-Body Problem trilogy combines so many things I love: rich, multi-layered characters and true existential stakes – all told as an elegant and deeply human allegory. I’m thrilled to kick off my partnership with Netflix with this accomplished creative team.”

The Three-Body Problem serves as part of Game of Throne’s duo overall deal with the streaming platform giant to produce new original content, which they were able to secure after backing out of their planned Star Wars project.

No released date has been announced as of yet. Stay tuned for more updates on The Three-Body Problem from the Game of Thrones showrunners.
