Popular fiction author George R.R. Martin whose fantasy novels became the base for the superhit HBO series Game of Thrones, recently stated that he was surprised how the TV series seemed to get away from the source material, i.e., his books.

The ending of Game of Thrones has been criticized heavily by the fans, and many blame the author for not being quick enough in releasing his Song of Ice and Fire novels. The next novel he is working on is called The Winds of the Winter. Martin recently showed surprise about the fact that the TV series managed to outstrip his output.

“Looking back, I wish I’d stayed ahead of the books. My biggest issue there was when they began the [TV] series, I had four books already in print, and the fifth one came out just as the series was starting in 2011. I had a five-book head-start, and these are gigantic books, as you know; I never thought they would catch up with me, but they did. They caught up with me and passed me.”

He is right as the show completed eight seasons by the time Martin just published one volume in the series. Martin also confessed that when the Game of Thrones tv series moved ahead of the source material he writes, he felt that it was “going in somewhat different directions. So, I’m still working on the book, but you’ll see my ending when that comes out,” he said.

HBO is working on another series, House of the Dragon, that will have 10 episodes in the first season and will probably be released in 2022. It will be set hundreds of years before the events that occurred in the Game of Thrones TV series and will focus on the history of House Targaryen. It will be based on Martin’s book, Fire and Blood that has already been published. If successful, this TV series might lead to more TV adaptations of George R.R. Martin’s books and please the Game of Thrones fans who were disappointed with the eighth season.

Elsewhere in the entertainment world, the trailer of The Many Saints of Newark is out now.
