Great Scott, the DeLorean is back! Meet the 250km/h Gull-Winged Alpha5

The DeLorean returns as a fully electric car.

The DeLorean time machine is back about 40 years after the first Back to the Future franchise was released. Rechristened as Alpha5, this beauty is now electric. Its key features include super-speed and stylish doors.

The original DeLorean company went bankrupt in the early 1980s before its only, and the first model codenamed the DMC-12 achieved stardom thanks to the Back to the Future movie franchise. Now, it is back as Alpha5 with a sleek design and all-electric power that is truly the future now.

The Alpha5 has top-hinged ‘gullwing’ doors that resemble ones in the original DMC-12, but its styling is way more advanced thanks to smooth curves, futuristic LED lights, and big multi-spoke alloy wheels. The DeLorean’s latest version also has a three-spoke steering wheel, rectangular instrument binnacle, and a flat centre console design that reference the original car. The physical switches have been replaced by a pair of widescreen displays and touch-sensitive buttons.

In the spot where the flux capacitor sat in the previous DeLorean, one can see the second row of seats, four seats, to be precise. Each of them has a sporty design that draws attention to the Alpha5.

The old DeLorean was powered by the V6 petrol engine that was popular in the 1980s. The Alpha5 is powered by a battery of over 100kWh like the Tesla Model S sedan. It also has multiple electric motors in the “base performance model.” It is enough to complete the 0-97km/h in just 2.99 seconds. It can go from 0-144kmph in just 4.35 seconds. The top speed is 250km/h.

The revived DeLorean company says its new Alpha5 will be capable of over 483km of driving range thanks to the car’s targeted drag coefficient of only 0.23Cd. A special Launch Edition model of the car will be available for early buyers. The company’s website invites interested parties to register their interest.

Talking about Alpha5, Neilo Harris, DeLorean’s vice president of brand and creative, said, “We have been given the opportunity to re-imagine a brand that has meant so much to so many people from all corners of the globe, for four decades. DeLorean has touched so many lives and set the stage for so many memories… we are all now witnessing a new chapter of this amazing story.” The plans for the Australia release have also not been shared till now.
