We all know that there are tons of self-help guide books and online videos that provides long-term solutions and preventive measures to fight off anxiety. If finding a place to meditate, or getting a massage is not at your convenience during the attack, will you just give into your fears or would you rather try to fight anxiety with a slight of hand?

The high demands of your job, the stress in your personal relationships, and the growing financial responsibilities ahead of you are just some of the imminent events or situations that you might be caught up with that provides uncertain outcome. These stressors if not addressed seriously can lead to anxiety and panic disorders.

Anxiety attacks may come without warning. The feelings of uneasiness, nervousness, feelings of danger, or dread are the bothersome emotions during these episodes. Not to mention that they are oftentimes accompanied by muscle twitching, rapid breathing, heavy sweating, palpitations and lethargy which can happen to you anytime, and anywhere.

But how to fight anxiety with an amazing hand trick? The trick is oftentimes called the “Thumb Hack”.  You simply have to put your thumb on your mouth and blow on it!–Wait! What?!

You read it right the first time!

  • Whenever you feel anxious, find a comfortable spot where you can take a deep breath approximately 7 seconds.
  • Hold it for at least 3 seconds.
  • Blow on your thumb, blocking the airway with your thumb as you exhale for another 7 seconds.
  • Repeat several times until you feel better.

It may sound silly and ridiculous but it actually helps you to get control of your breathing. Keep in mind that this is not a trick to fool you. The science into that was explained during the interview made by the Daily Mail to Dr. Arun Gosh of Spire Liverpool Hospital.  The act of blowing hyper-inflates the lungs that requires your body to deepen your breathing which in turn provides your body a maximum oxygen intake which is essential in calming yourself down.

More so, this fight anxiety with by cooling down your thumb thru blowing is a method that stimulates the vagus nerve. There’s one vagus nerve on each side of our body which can be found from our brain stem through our neck and runs through our chest and abdomen. The attempt to exhale through blocked airway activated the vagus nerve that sends electrical impulses in certain areas of our brain and to calm the heart rate and reduce blood pressure hence will slow down your pulse in an instant.
