Sir Sean Connery has died at the age of 90, his family confirms. The retired Scottish actor and producer was best known for his portrayal of British literary and film character, James Bond, being the first to bring the role to the big screen and appearing in seven of the spy thrillers in the James Bond franchise.

 

Sir Sean Connery’s acting career spanned for decades and his many awards included an Oscar, two Bafta awards, three Golden Globes, including the Cecil B. DeMille Award and a Henrietta Award. 

 

Sir Sean Connery’s other films included The Hunt for Red October, The Rock and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.

He was largely regarded as being the best actor to have played James Bond in the long-running franchise, often topping the list in such in polls.

His Academy Awards win came in 1988, when he won the best supporting actor award for playing a role as an Irish cop in the film, The Untouchables.

Sir Sean Connery was knighted by the Queen at Holyrood Palace in 2000.

He celebrated his 90th birthday in August, this year.
