Iconic Watches of Steve McQueen and Paul Newman are Going to Auction
The timepieces will be the crowning jewels of Phillips’ ‘RACING PULSE’ watch auction
Are you a big fan of watches? If yes, then you may remember the legendary Rolex Daytona owned by Paul Newman got sold for a whopping $17.8 million at an auction house in 2017. Now, another watch owned by Paul Newman called the ‘Big Red’ is going to get displayed. Along with that, reports suggest that a 1969 Heuer Monaco Ref. 1133 owned by Steve McQueen will also be listed.
As for the Big Red, it is a stainless-steel Rolex Cosmograph Daytona with Re. 6262. This watch gets its nickname from the large red letters on it that spell ‘Daytona’.
Paul Newman received this watch from his wide Joanna Woodward on their 25th anniversary back in 1983. Now, the Phillips auction house is going to put it for sale in the “Racing Pulse” on the 12th of December.
Currently, this watch is owned by Paul Newman’s daughter Clew Newman Soderlund. According to reports, the money generated from this sale will go to charities including the Safe Water Network and SeriousFun Children’s Network, both of which were established by Newman himself.
According to his daughter, Phillips Newman wore the watch almost every single day until he gave it to her. In the same year (2008), Paul Newman passed.
Based on current estimates, this Paul Newman watch is worth more than $1 Milliion. However, the price could go way higher in the auction.
Along with that, the Steve McQueen Heuer Monaco watch is no less than a treasure either. The actor wore this watch in 1970 during the Le Mans filming. And since 2020 celebrates the 50th anniversary of this classic, the time is right!
After the wrapping of the film, Steve McQueen gifted the watch to Alltounian, the film’s chief mechanic. Furthermore, Haig Alltounian has also been the personal mechanic of Steve McQueen. And now, he puts the watch up for sale fresh as it once was!
