Is Elon Musk Finally Moving Ahead with the Tesla Restaurant Plans?
Trademarks filed for Tesla restaurant concept

Tesla has filed a new trademark for its brand under restaurant services. It is the first vital step in ensuring that the company acts on the idea of a Tesla Restaurant the CEO Elon Musk and other company executives have been talking about since 2017.

Elon Musk’s company has applied for three new trademarks that will cover categories like restaurant services, pop-up restaurant services, take-out restaurant services, and self-service restaurant services. The filings regarding the future Tesla restaurants were done on May 27 with the US Patent and Trademark Office. This trademark application will be reviewed by an attorney in the last few days of August probably.

The idea of a Tesla restaurant was first discussed in 2017 when CTO JOB Straubel mentioned that the company might move into the hospitality industry. At that time, the idea was to transform EV charging stations into full-service convenience stores which also serve food.

Then in a Tweet, the CEO Elon Musk expanded upon the idea and wrote, “Gonna put an old school drive-in, roller skates & rock restaurant at one of the new Tesla Supercharger locations in LA.”

Tweets of Elon Musk regarding Tesla restaurant concepts

A few months after Elon Musk’s tweet, Tesla applied for a restaurant and a supercharger station. When a Tesla restaurant becomes a reality, it will have the iconic T logo of the brand. It is also featured on the USTPO application. Elon Musk’s company also filed trademarks for the word Tesla and one of its stylized versions.

This filing proves that Elon Musk’s company is finally acting on the plans to create Sonic-meets-fuelling station. The company, however, would have to wait for a while before the restaurant becomes a reality. As per industry experts, the approval process takes a few months, and even after that, a few months are needed to get the permits, especially in Santa Monica. So, it might take up to a year to get the thing started. Tesla did not respond to a request for comment. This is the second time in the last few days that Tesla has made it to the headlines. It last got attention when it announced plans to activate an in-car camera to monitor drivers using Tesla autopilot.
