In February this year, Jeff Bezos had announced that he would be quitting his job as the CEO of Amazon. Staying true to his words, he has actually done it. He has stepped down from the important role that helped him become one of the richest people on the planet and accumulate a fortune of AU$ 262 billion.

Jeff Bezos retires as Amazon CEO

While talking of the change in February, Jeff Bezos had said, “I’m excited to announce that this Q3 I’ll transition to Executive Chair of the Amazon Board and Andy Jassy will become CEO.” He added, “In the Exec Chair role, I intend to focus my energies and attention on new products and early initiatives.”

Jeff Bezos’ journey with Amazon has been pretty long. He founded the company in 1994, and it was originally a humble bookstore that he ran out of his parent’s garage. Now, it is one of the biggest companies globally that has led the shift to e-commerce.

The company has made him extraordinarily rich, and that is the primary reason he can afford to build a company that tours people into space and invest in a 10,000-year clock. His race with Richard Branson to reach the space first is making the headlines these days.

Though Amazon has done pretty well over the years, the company had had its share of criticism as well. For example, questions have been raised about its treatment of employees and the data collection practices that are being followed.

Amazon has also performed very well in the times of COVID-19. As more and more people were stuck at home and depended on online mediums for deliveries and entertainment, Jeff Bezos led the company to earn a lot of money.

When Jeff Bezos stepped down from the role of CEO this Monday, he had a fortune of AU$ 262 billion. Though he is just 57, his fortune is 739,489 times more than the median net worth of an American individual at age 65.

Amazon is also making the successor of Jeff Bezos, Andy Jassy, quite rich. He will get AU$ 266 in extra stock that will pay out over a period of 10 years.
