Joker 2 is confirmed, and so is Joaquin Phoenix’s return as the infamous DC Comics villain. The film director, Todd Phillips, has shared an image of the completed script and the film’s working title.

In the previous Joker, Joaquin Phoenix played the role of Arthur Fleck, a comedian, and clown who wasn’t doing well and lived in a crumbling 1981 Gotham City. After many struggles, he falls down a rabbit hole of madness and eventually takes his frustrations out on people he thinks contribute to society’s decay. It became the first-ever R-rated film to gross over US$ 1 billion at the global box office. It also earned 11 nominations at the 92nd Academy Awards. Since then, the talks of Joker 2 have been happening.

This is the first time the news regarding Joker 2 has been confirmed. Phillips took to Instagram to show the completed script, the film’s working title, and an image of Joaquin Phoenix reading the current draft of the screenplay.

The confirmation of Joker 2 has come only a few days after it was reported that the filmmaker was getting remarkably close to cracking the sequel. All this happened at a time when Michael De Luca took over as head of Warner Bros. alongside fellow former MGM exec Pamela Abdy. Joaquin Phoenix’s return in Joker 2 is good news for fans who thought his Academy Award for Best Actor was well deserved. The previous film also won the Academy Award for the Best Original Score for Hildur Guðnadóttir.

The script of Joker 2 also offers a hint of what’s to come next as the subtitle reads “Folie à Deux.” It roughly translates to “madness for two.” It is a mental disorder affecting two or more individuals. So, it is likely that the film might have multiple Jokers. Willem Dafoe recently proposed this concept. He suggested the story might see a copycat Joker face off against the original Joker (played by Phoenix).
