Maldives Floating City According to reports from the US Geological Survey and NASA, about 80% of Maldives might become uninhabitable by 2050, thanks to the rising sea levels. The country is trying to beat that by initiating a project that might change those odds. It is building an floating island city that might change the game entirely.

Dutch Docklands, a Netherlands-based developer, and the government of Maldives recently shared plans for the unique floating city. The floating city has been in development for over a decade. It is expected to house thousands of floating, water-front residences. All the residences will be aligned in a functional grid that spans across a 200-hectare lagoon.

Known as Maldives Floating City, the site will be just 10 minutes from Male, the country’s capital. The Island city will also have plenty of hotels, boutiques, restaurants, and even a world-class marina. The hexagon-shaped segments of the one-of-its-kind city in the Maldives will be modelled on the geometry of local coral. They will also be connected to a ring of barrier islands.

Though the city will float above the warm waters, there will be island barriers around the lagoon that will serve as breakers down below. This unique design of the floating city will reduce the impact of waves and stabilize the structures and complexes on the surface.

The colourful city will also mirror traditional Maldivian architecture. Dutch Docklands has worked closely with local authorities and tapped Waterstudio, urban planning and architecture firm, to design the concept to ensure they got the details right.

The homes in the floating city will be low-rise structures placed along palm tree-lined streets and can be used for domestic purposes. A person can access the amenities on foot or a bike via a network of bridges, canals, and docks. The unique city of Maldives will also have beaches that offer relaxation. The pricing will begin from $360 000 for individual houses that start from 1000 square feet. Government-issued titles and deeds will back it. It may allow its homeowners to qualify for Maldivian residency permits.
