From March 8 this year, the Sydney lockout laws will be removed in Kings Cross in an attempt to revitalize the vibrant night-time economy of the capital city. Here is what is changing from March 8.

Lifting Sydney lockout laws

The main point of the Sydney lockout laws was that bars, pubs, and nightclubs could not accept new patrons after 1:30 AM. Now, they will be able to serve drinks till 3.30 AM. The restrictions regarding the use of glasses post-midnight and cheap cocktails will also be lifted.

The Sydney lockout laws were first introduced in 2014 when alcohol-fuelled violence led to two teenagers’ deaths. This is the first time the restrictions in the Kings Cross are finally lifted. Last time, the restrictions were eased in Oxford Street and CBD. It was in January last year.

The announcement regarding the easing of Sydney lockout laws was made by Tourism Minister Stuart Ayres and Premier Gladys Berejiklian. The Premier said “Kings Cross has transformed considerably since these laws were introduced over six years ago. The precinct is now well-positioned to continue to evolve into a vibrant lifestyle and cultural destination with a diverse mix of small bars, live music venues and restaurants.”

In addition to easing the Sydney lockout laws, the city has appointed a night mayor. This position would be held by Time Out Australia MD Michael Rodrigues who will see to it that the city transforms into a 24-hour economy.

People who are underage and plan to enter a bar, pub or nightclub will still have problems as the ID scanners will still be needed at many venues during the operating hours.

We think that the easing of Sydney lockout laws is a positive step towards boosting the economy. It is also one of the new things the government has introduced recently. The other was the COVID-19 vaccine certificates as per which people who have been given COVID-19 vaccine will get a digital certificate of the same that they can easily use to travel to another city or country.
