Viewers have showered endless love on Spanish TV series Money Heist’s fourth instalment. They have helped it to possibly outdraw Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness, the docuseries, everyone, including the US President Donald Trump, is talking about. The Spanish drama involving The Professor and his gang of robbers has enticed the viewers once more and has helped Netflix fetch the viewing numbers.

In the quarterly earnings report, Netflix stated that about 64 million accounts might choose to watch Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness in the first four weeks while Money Heist (aka La Casa de Papel) will probably be watched by 65 million member accounts in the first four weeks.

The streamer had changed its definition of what constitutes a view in the previous earnings report. Now, a member account who watched at least two minutes of a movie or a TV series is considered enough. Before it was 70 per cent of an episode in a TV series, and 70 per cent of a film. Then the company stated that the new criteria would lead to figures that are larger than the previous reporting.

Though Money Heist and Tiger King are doing really well, they are far behind The Witcher that fetched about 76 million viewers in the same time period.

Nielsen has released different numbers when it comes to views of Tiger King and Money Heist. It says that over the first 10 days of release, Tiger King had an average of 19 million viewers and about 34 million watched a few minutes of it.

Netflix doesn’t believe in the accuracy of Nielsen’s SVOD ratings as the streamer says the company doesn’t measure viewing on devices other than the TV and doesn’t count the views gained outside of the US.

The popularity of Money Heist and Tiger King is rising rapidly partially due to the Coronavirus crisis as billions of people are stuck at home and need some entertainment. Acknowledging the same, the company said “We’re acutely aware that we are fortunate to have a service that is even more meaningful to people confined at home, and which we can operate remotely with minimal disruption in the short to medium term. Like other home entertainment services, we’re seeing temporarily higher viewing and increased membership growth. We expect viewing to decline and membership growth to decelerate as home confinement ends, which we hope is soon.”
