Morbius Review: The New Marvel Film is Unoriginal and Boring

Possibly a new low for a Marvel movie.

Sony Pictures have been involved in several projects interconnected with the Marvel Cinematic Universe through the multiverse. This started with the release of Venom (2018), followed by some other movies. Recently, the studio released Morbius, which follows the story of Dr. Michael Morbius, a blood-thirsty scientist.

Morbius review

Using the Spider-Man universe, Sony has adapted movies of some famous villains. In Spider-Man: No Way Home, it was revealed that Sony’s Morbius and Venom are interconnected with the MCU. While the Spider-Man movies in the MCU have great merits, Morbius fails to deliver.

Based on a review of critics, Morbius is a waste of talent. It ended up being a mediocre superhero origin movie that looked more like a recreation of some better movies.

Jared Leto plays the role of Dr. Michael Morbius, who is a scientist. He suffers from a blood disorder and dedicates his life to finding a cure for it. While he does cure himself by modifying his DNA with the help of vampire bats, he ends up becoming a vampire himself.

As a result of his experiments, Morbius ends up gaining sonar hearing and super-human strength. With that, he needs blood for his survival. Things get a lot more complicated when Milo (played by Matt Smith), his childhood friend, steals the serum to cure himself. It turns out that he suffers from the same disease as Morbius. In the process, Milo also ends up becoming a living vampire.

Now with the help of Martine Bancroft, a fellow scientist, and Nicholas, who is more like a father figure to him, Morbius aims to save the city. Milo starts a murderous rampage throughout New York city while FBI agents Al Rodriquez and Simon Stroud are trying hard to track Milo down.

Morbius is directed by Daniel Espinosa, and the script comes from Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama. However, despite the brilliant cast and esteemed writers, Morbius ends up struggling to find freshness in a large landscape of movies that have followed the same origin story formula. This is something that almost critics have complained about in almost every other review.

As a result of this, Morbius looks like just another superhero origin film. However, according to some review posts, the biggest struggle of the script is in terms of character development. For instance, Morbius spends a huge chunk of time explaining the abilities and powers that Morbius has gained after becoming a hybrid vampire.

Instead, the script should have focused on Michael as a character. Unfortunately, we do not get to see a lot of that. Instead, his vampirism and newly found skills are used to deliver some nicely shot action sequences. Since the movie lacks a good character story, Morbius is just another superhero film that is not much different from what we have already been seeing for over a decade or two.

But it would not be fair to say that the actors have performed poorly. As much as they could do, the cast has done a brilliant job at playing their roles. For instance, a quick review of the film shows Jared Leto’s Morbius as a great hero. But he just lacks the motivation and personality.

For instance, the film starts with Michael looking for a cure desperately. However, once he finds a cure, the script starts feeling weak. It looks as if the film does not know where to go after that. This is where Milo becomes the next great character. That is possible because his motivations and character traits are much clearer than Michael.

An initial review of the film shows that Matt Smith stands out very well in the movie even though by Marvel’s standards, he is playing the role of a typical villain. Just like many villains in the MCU, Milo (Matt Smith) falls into the same trap of having the same powers as the hero but with evil intentions.

Other than that, the remaining cast of Morbius does not make much of an impression. However, the most frustrating thing about the film is that it could have been much more. The PG-13 rating damps down much of the horrors that we could have seen. After all, it is a vampire movie. In the end, it looks like the movie is trying hard not to get too much into horror and to stick to its superhero narrative.
