NBC Cancels Golden Globes 2022 as HFPA Fails to Improve Its Practices
Tom Cruise also returns his awards to HFPA over controversy
The ongoing tussle between HFPA (Hollywood Foreign Press Association) and NBC has taken a new turn as the latter has announced that it is cancelling Golden Globes 2022 for the time being while some important changes are made. Read below for the details.
HFPA and the Golden Globes
Golden Globes are awards that honour the best in the film and TV industry. They have been gaining attention and admiration since 1944, when they were first organized. Some people even consider them as a big one among Oscar’s precursors.
HFPA had suffered many other blows before the news of the cancellation of Golden Globes 2022 surfaced. Brands like Netflix, Amazon, and Warner Media have cut ties with it recently. Even renowned actor Tom Cruise has decided to return three Golden Globes he had received for Magnolia, Fourth of July, and Jerry Maguire.
Releasing a statement about the cancellation of Golden Globes 2022, NBC said “We continue to believe that the HFPA is committed to meaningful reform. However, change of this magnitude takes time and work, and we feel strongly that the HFPA needs time to do it right. As such, NBC will not air the 2022 Golden Globes. Assuming the organization executes on its plan, we are hopeful we will be in a position to air the show in January 2023.”
HFPA has been working on many reforms in the recent past. Last week, it released a framework for reform which includes several measures that might help increase the number of people of colour. This plan also includes new restrictions on gifts the members are able to accept and payments for work on their respective committees.
NBC was not too fond of the plan as there were no timelines for the changes it planned to implement. It also wanted to see more substantial changes like ensuring that the number of new members is more than the old membership.
The controversy that led to the cancellation of Golden Globes 2022 began in 2020 when an investigation by the LA times revealed a lack of diversity and questionable financial practices of the HFPA. In other entertainment news, the Venom 2 trailer seems quite interesting. You should check it for sure.
