According to recent reports, Netflix is finally expanding its subscription service beyond movies and television. Now, the streaming giant plans to enter the world of video games and has taken a former Facebook and EA executive, Mike Verdu on board.

Verdu will serve as the VP of game development at Netflix and will report directly to Greg Peters, the COO. Previously, Mike Verdu has remained as the VP at Facebook and worked directly with developers to add content and games to the Oculus VR headsets.

Netflix Video Games

The main idea behind the expansion is the add video games to the streaming platform by 2022. An inside source (name has been kept private due to confidentiality) has mentioned that Netflix has no plans to charge more for the gaming content.

As soon as this news was reported by Bloomberg, there was an increase of 3.3% in shares. Quite a success, as Netflix has been focusing on growth and development, especially in the US market.

After all, other platforms like Disney+ and Amazon Prime Video are giving the streaming giant major competition. Various steps taken by Netflix in this regard include an online merchandise store, children’s programming, and Steven Spielberg movies.

While Amazon Prime Video and Disney+ have certainly not beaten the streaming giant, the number of new subscribers in the last quarter was lower than what was projected. While Netflix has decided to enter the world of video games to stay ahead of the line, it is a bold move.

To meet the growing expectations in the video-game industry, Netflix is planning to build its game development team soon. Related openings are already advised on their website.

If the streaming giant successfully manages to make a name in the video games industry, the prospects for new business will be great. This would set Netflix apart from its competitors that do not offer video games as part of their services.

According to some researchers, the company has already started working on modifying the app, which further suggests that Netflix is serious about introducing video games.

In other news, a sealed copy of the Super Mario 64 got sold for approximately $2 Million (AUD) in a recent auction.
