Volkswagen Group has been clear that they have wanted to join Formula 1 for a long time. For that, it selected two of the best-known brands, Porsche, and Audi. Now, things seem to be moving quickly for Porsche. According to documents filed with the Moroccan national competition regulator, the brand wants to acquire a 50% stake in Red Bull Racing.

Morocco was chosen as Porsche, and Red Bull had to file with the antitrust authorities of up to 20 countries, including those nations which are outside the European Union, including Morocco. The official announcement regarding the Formula 1 entry was to go out during the Austrian Grand Prix. It didn’t happen as the FIA World Motor Sport Council did not approve the 2026 engine regulations before the 29th of June.

Now it is confirmed that Porsche is officially joining the sport. It will collaborate with Red Bull on a new power unit for 2026. It is also quite obvious that Red Bull’s sister team AlphaTauri would also be running Porsche power units in 2026 as part of the deal. However, AlphaTauri was not mentioned in the document.

There is no confirmation regarding Audi joining Formula 1. Previously, the brand was linked with a deal with McLaren. Now, Sauber seems to be the likely candidate as Audi is still negotiating with Sauber owner Finn Rausing regarding the acquisition of 75% of the team’s shares. If that deal happens, Audi might become a fully-fledged factory team.

The inside word says Porsche and Red Bull might reach an official agreement “by the end of summer.” It might not happen by the 4th of August, as some reports have stated. What do you think of Porsche joining Formula 1?
