Though many iconic car manufacturers want to lend their name to F1 teams (think Aston Martin, Ferrari, McLaren), the sport needs new blood. It seems that Porsche might be the next contender as the brand is seriously considering it.

Porsche Formula 1

According to an exclusive report by BBC Sport, the German automobile manufacturer will enter Formula 1, and you can soon see a Porsche branded team. Car sports lovers will know that the dearth of engine suppliers has become a problem for the sport in the last few years, and hence the reliance on so-called ‘customer teams’ is increasing.

The entry of Porsche, a brand that does have a factory-backed team, will ensure that F1 becomes more interesting. However, it could also mean that the attention from dominant teams of F1, like Ferrari and Mercedes, might shift away to them.

The marque has not entered a contractor-made car for decades now. The last car was in the mid-60s, and it was 718. It was the last Porsche that took part in an official Formula 1 race. However, the automobile manufacturer hasn’t been completely away from F1. It has supplied engines to other teams. It even supplied engines to the Niki Lauda’s McLaren team in the 80s.

A key factor that will impact Porsche’s entry into F1 is the adoption of more environment-friendly fuels. In March this year, the Vice President of Porsche Motorsport, Fritz Enzinger, stated that an F1 entry from Porsche “would be of great interest if aspects of sustainability” He also added that “Should these aspects be confirmed, we will evaluate them in detail within the VW Group and discuss further steps.”

One of the interesting facts that might confirm that Porsche might join F1 soon is that the CEO of Porsche, Oliver Blume, and the CEO of Audi, Markus Duesmann, reportedly attended the round-table discussions in Austria last month. It concerned the direction of the next F1 power unit regulations.

Even if Porsche decided to enter F1, it might not be able to do so before 2025 or even 2026 as that’s how long it will probably take to fine down the details of the next F1 power unit regulations. Speaking of Porsche, have you had a look at the 2022 Porsche Taycan yet?
