Just recently, Quentin Tarantino appeared on the Joe Rogan Experience and discussed the heat surrounding Bruce Lee’s portrayal in the movie, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. The outrage regarding the scene is not recent though.

Clip from the Quentin Tarantino movie went viral right after the film’s release in 2019. Regarding this, Bruce Lee’s daughter pointed out that the scene portrays her father as an “arrogant as**hole who was full of hot air.”

At the same time, Bruce Lee’s widow suggested that the portrayal is a mere caricature. It was meant to look silly and stupid. However, the actor, Mike Moh who played the role pointed out that Bruce Lee’s reputation in Hollywood was indeed arrogant during his prime.

Regarding the controversy, Quentin Tarantino pointed out that it is understandable if Bruce Lee’s daughter has a problem with the scene. After all, the scene portrays her late father.

With that, Quentin Tarantino further stated, “But anybody else? Go suck a d*ck. And the thing about it, though, is even if you just look at it, it is obvious Cliff tricked him. That is how he was able to do it, he tricked him.”

After that, Quentin Tarantino went ahead to reveal an interesting fact. It turns out that the scene takes inspiration from an actual feud between Bruce Lee and Gene LeBell, a stuntman, on The Green Hornet set.

However, regarding the fights with Stuntmen, a Bruce Lee biographer, Matthew Polly stated, “he never started the fights, they always came up to him and challenged him. He further added that the scene is historically inaccurate and makes Bruce Lee look like a disrespectful jerk.

Well as far as the justification for Cliff Booth overpowering Bruce Lee goes, Quentin Tarantino has mentioned that Booth World War 2 background. That is how he was able to trick Bruce Lee in the scene. Of course, in real life, one may not have the chance to stand against the legendary Jeet Kune Do master.
