The Halloween season is about to begin, and most people would turn to scary movies for some self-induced anxiety and adrenaline hits. If you are among them and you have always wanted an answer to the age-old question of which is the scariest movie ever then you are in luck. Science has answered this important question after an interesting study.

As per science, the scariest movie of all time is 2012’s horror film Sinister that was directed by Scott Derrickson. It is followed by Insidious. The Conjuring, Hereditary and Paranormal Activity make up the top five.

The study that revealed Sinister to be the scariest movie was commissioned by the broadbandchoices. It put together a list of 50 top horror flicks across IMDb, Reddit and other such platforms and monitored the usual resting heart rate of the audience members as well as their heart rate patterns during the film. The results were achieved after experts worked out the difference.

Though Sinister was named as the scariest movie ever, Insidious was the film that caused the biggest spike in the heart rate of the audience. One scene even managed to generate a pulse-pounding 133 beats per minute.

For those who have not seen the scariest movie ever, Sinister follows Ellison’s family as they move into a new home and Ellison discovers several old Super 8mm footage that depicts many grisly murders. As Ellison tries to explore the mystery behind the videos, he ends up making his family the next target of a demon.

In addition to revealing the scariest movie ever, the study also revealed some other interesting findings. Broadbandchoices dubbed James Wan as King of Horror as he was at the helm of three different scary movies that were in the top ten list. Modern movies performed better than older ones like The Exorcist, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Nightmare on Elm Street that are considered “better” horror movies. The previous flicks did not scare study participants as much as modern films. Audition was named as the scariest foreign horror film in the study.
