Spider-Man 3: Alfred Molina to Reprise the Role of Doctor Octopus
Doctor Octopus Back From Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 2 Movie
Alfred Molina who starred as Doctor Octopus in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man franchise is all set to reprise his role in Spider-Man 3. The film is yet untitled and will have Tom Holland reprising the role of Spidey. He has previously played the same role in two solo Spider-Man films and joined two Avenger films as well. The film will hit the theatres sometime in late 2021, and the filming process has already begun.
Doctor Octopus in Spider-Man 3
The details of the cast have been coming in the last few weeks and people are getting more excited for the film. It was previously reported that Benedict Cumberbatch would also join Spider-Man 3 film as Doctor Strange and he will take on the role of Spider-Man’s mentor after the sad demise of Iron Man (played by Robert Downey Jr.). It was also reported that Jamie Foxx would return as Electro in Spider-Man 3. You last saw him in The Amazing Spider-Man 2.
Alfred Molina has apparently started shooting for the film as well, and he will have his old outfit back. It means that he will have the metal tentacles again that might help him to get a hold of Spidey. Sony and Marvel have not confirmed the report of the return of Doctor Octopus in Spider-Man 3 at the time of writing this article.
The addition of Electro and Doc Ock also makes it clear that Sony and Marvel are keen on uniting all three live-action Spidey franchises. Sony paved the way for this when it introduced the multiverse in 2018 film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. The post-credit scene of that film confirmed that Venom took place elsewhere in its multiverse. Sony made a deal with Marvel/Disney and allowed Peter Parker to appear in MCU. So, it’s likely that the film series of both studios might overlap and there might be many movies in the Spider-Verse in the future.
Rumours also suggest that Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire might return as two separate Spider-Man characters as well, but neither Disney/Marvel nor Sony has commented anything confirming the rumours.
If the reports are true and Doctor Octopus has indeed joined Electro in Spider-Man 3 to make things tough for Spidey, it would mean that the film will have two villains now. Some people think that it might be a challenge to incorporate both villains in the story without overstuffing it.
But we do not think adding two villains to Spider-Man 3 would be a big challenge for Marvel as the studio has demonstrated the ability to balance adding many characters in a film without overstuffing the story. Remember, a group of actors doing a fabulous job in Guardians of the Galaxy films and also, all your favourite superheroes teamed up in successful Avengers films. In related news, Deadpool 3 is already proceeding with production under Marvel Studios and it is gaining a lot of attention.
