The Finale Review

The Game of Thrones: Iron Throne Recap
Game of Thrones Season 8 Episode 6 – HBO

The episode opens with Dany pulling off one of the most breathtaking entrances in the history of television. The look on her face is priceless. She addresses her army and hints at continuing the leadership by destruction and making a new start.

Tyrion Lannister is seen walking through the carnage, sees his sibling’s dead, cries over them and goes to hand in his resignation (The Hand handing his resignation.) Yes, he didn’t want to be the Hand anymore. Dany tells him that he will be punished as he helped Jaime. He retorts back that he tried to save his siblings weighed against the fact that she killed so many innocent people to claim the throne.

The Test of Love!

Jon and Tyrion have a reasonable discussion about why and why shouldn’t Dany be killed. Jon Snow, as most of you might have guessed, pulls off the same what can I do with this moral quandary face that he has had on for eight seasons now. Finally, Tyrion convinces him that Dany’s war crimes are insane and unforgivable so she should be stabbed in the back. Jon makes an exception, though because he kills her by plunging the knife into her heart. And with that, we see the end of one of the fiercest female characters in any TV series.

The Fire

What frustrated us more than Dany’s death was Drogon’s mourning period because the poor chap lost everything in human’s greed for power and the silly Game of Thrones. His brothers died first, and now his mother is also dead. He actually nudges Dany, and his grief breaks our hearts. Drogon also has his little revenge because he burns the Iron Throne. Yes, the throne is actually completely melted, so the question of who will sit on it becomes kind of superfluous. After that, he holds his mother and flies off and disappears into the clouds (We have no idea where he went).

Who Owns the Throne?

Now it’s time to decide who has the melted Iron Throne for which the entire Game of Thrones series has been enacted and for which millions of fans have been curious for years. A meeting is organized and is attended by Westeros’ great lords. Some faces we recognize easily are Bran, Arya, and Sansa Stark. Samwell Tarly, Robin Arryn, Yohn Royce of the Vale, Ser Davos Seaworth, Ser Brienne, Tyrion and a guy from House Blackfish. It goes to none other than one of the most frustrating characters of the show, Bran Stark and we are quite pissed at this point.

The way everyone just agreed that he should be the king is one of the most annoying parts of the entire Game of Thrones series. Ironically, there was some logic involved in selecting Bran as the king as Tyrion highlighted that he wouldn’t be able to have any heirs. As the sons of the king are usually cruel and stupid in the Game of Thrones series, they all agree it was a good decision.

Many fans are raising questions about Bran’s ability to be the king because he had said that he doesn’t want to be the king but, in the end, he got the throne, and he doesn’t seem to feel bad about it and admits that he had travelled long for this day only. By this point, we were quite sure that Game of Thrones has pulled off the most amazing feat, its finale is more controversial than the Seinfeld finale!

What About the Other Stars?

Among the other three prominent contenders for the Game of Thrones, Jon, Sansa, and Arya, only Sansa now has a throne. Yes, she is made the Queen of the North and succeeds in maintaining her region’s independence. Jon Snow goes back to the Night’s Watch where he meets Ghost again, and we finally had a smile on our faces as he gives attention to his bestfriend. Arya, not to many people’s surprise, decides to initiate a high seas adventure by planning to visit the place where the world ends- west of Westeros.

If we think positively for a minute here, we realize that Arya and Jon Snow are given futures that have some possibilities. (Would we be asking too much if we hope to see their stories in a Game of Thrones sequel anytime in the future?)

In the first scene of Game of Thrones, we saw Brothers of the Night’s Watch as they ventured towards the north of the wall and they were murdered by White Walkers. In the last scene of Game of Thrones, we see Jon and a squad of wildings riding North of Castle Black and entering the same woods.

Is the Ending Justified?

After watching the finale episode of Game of Thrones, we can only say that it left us feeling dissatisfied though it wasn’t as bad as we were hoping for because it justified most of the actions of the key characters. It also leaves scope for continuing the series in the future as Bran might not be the king everyone wants and some might want to see maybe Jon Snow or Arya Stark holding more power.

What Do We Do Now?

Now that we have realized that the Game of Thrones series is finally over, many fans (including us) don’t know what they’ll look forward to in life. It is a strange feeling to get attached to a show that you are eager to wait for many months because you know “Winter is Coming” sooner or later and then realizing that Winter is over and it’s probably time to move on.

But, as always, there is some hope left for avid TV series’ fans because HBO is planning prequels and spin-offs that will keep you attached to Game of Thrones in one way or another for many years to come.

After all, the makers also realize that Game of Thrones series is the Goose with the golden eggs that must not be killed. If they do it, they won’t see great bunches of money pouring in thanks to the TRP charts, and all the brand associations Game of Thrones has managed to secure over the years.
