Please avoid these at all costs!

In not so distant past — just few decades ago, really — the office style had some defined norms and they were easier follow as they were universally considered as rules under “dress code”. Just put a suit, tie with polished oxford shoes and you were ready for the office.

Modern office style on the other hand has become a completely different ball game as the lines of right and wrong are becoming increasingly blurred, and it is becoming ambiguous on what to consider a “universally accepted” dress code at work. We have got the news for you, there is none!

But does it mean that trainers can be worn at work to mean business? Can you wear jeans to presentations? Steve Jobs did it, but we are not Steve Jobs. No one can be. So keep reading to make sure that you don’t make the mistakes most of the men make when it comes to modern office style.

Dressed Down

When it comes to office style, always ask yourself or consider whether what you are wearing at work is ‘trendy’ or ‘appropriate’. It can be both at the same time, but it always has to be appropriate. Meaning, your usual luxury lounge wear may be trendy but not appropriate for work.

How to achieve both trendy and appropriate? Wear Polo shirts but make sure you combine it with tailored pants. If you want to wear dressed down pants, then balance it off with a smart shirt and knit.

Faded Denims

Yes you can wear denims or jeans at work but not the ones which look like they have been to a car-wash service or an acid bath. Meaning, if you are wearing light coloured, dad denims, then you are doing it wrong. Buy jeans which are rich in colours, you can go with darker tones if you like, but wear oxford or chequered shirts. If you combine this with a blazer and derby shoe then you have achieved modern office style look with layering clothes. It actually spells success but jeans have to be a right fit.

Shorts and Beachwear

If there ever was a sin to commit at work with what you choose to wear at work is this. Prolonged summers and increasing heat does not warrant you appearing at your work in shorts, Bermuda shirts, and flip-flops. However, you can find a way to avoid the raised eyebrows if you go with tailored shorts or the slim-fit chinos. When it comes to colours, choose from these: khaki, navy, black, or sand. Your only option with this is to either go with polo shirts, or the crisp ones.

Undershirts that are visible

You can wear undershirts to avoid sweat spots or stains but mistakes men make is they go with white colour, and crewneck style. Try heather grey as it will reduce the visibility of your undershirts on lighter shirts and go with V-neck style as it will not reveal it when you have unbuttoned the top button of your shirt.

Shoe Adventures

Can you wear running shoes at work? Nay! The ones which have seen the dust and dirt but have not been cleaned yet? Nope! We don’t even recommend always going with black oxford or suedes with everything you wear at work. If you want casual look down there, go with box-fresh canvas, suede styles, or leather ones from Windsor Smith, Adidas, and D&G. You can adventure with colours but don’t try bolder ones.

Wrinkled Clothing

Creased, wrinkled, or unironed clothes should never be worn at work. Whether it is a dress shirt, polo, or tailored pants, you should always leave your house with ironed clothing. Whether it is old office style, or modern office style the wrinkled and creased clothing has always been looked down and will mess up with whatever contrast or style you are wearing.
