The Oxford COVID Vaccine Trial Is Put On Hold After An Adverse Reaction

The trial of the front running COVID vaccine has been put on hold after a participant in UK trial reported suffering from an adverse reaction. Though this setback seems huge in a world dealing with coronavirus pandemic every day, such instances are quite common and are not very worrisome. The Australian government has assured that it is working on the best possible vaccination strategy in these tough times.

The Australian health authorities reported the news of COVID vaccine trials being put on hold. Deputy Chief Medical Officer, Nick Coatsworth also stressed that an adverse reaction does not mean that the AstraZeneca’s and Oxford University’s COVID vaccine is dead. He also added, “But it is a serious adverse reaction, and it needs to be investigated.”

Australian Health Minister Greg Hunt also spoke regarding the COVID vaccine strategy of the Aussie government. He said that the govt. was pursuing a “diversified COVID-19 vaccine strategy.” He also mentioned that the precautions that are put in place by AstraZeneca due to just one participant incident are proof of the fact that safety is a primary focus during the trials.

A statement from his office said, “A COVID-19 vaccine will not be made available to Australians until it passes the strict safety and efficacious regulatory assessments by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA).”

The main goal of the process of putting the trial on hold is to “allow the review of safety data”. The details of the incident and the adverse reaction have not been shared with the public. However, it is being reported that the person will make a full recovery from the adverse reaction.

AstraZeneca has released a statement regarding the pause in COVID vaccine trails. The company said that the pause is a routine action which happens anytime there is an instance of an unexplained illness during one of the trials. It also said that the illness could happen by chance in large trials, each incident must be independently investigated to ensure that the overall integrity of the study is preserved.

The pause in clinical trials of COVID vaccine development efforts by AstraZeneca and Oxford University is influencing the researchers who are working on competing trials. They are relooking at their own research and trying to locate any potential reactions in their own studies.
