This year’s rich list of Australians under 40 years of age has made it clear that tech is the path to success. The Australian Financial Review has released the list of wealthiest 100 young Aussies and 56 of them owe their fortunes to tech. Read on to know whose fortunes grew considerably.

AFR’s rich list of Australians under 40 was topped by Scott Farquhar, the co-founder of Atlassian whose fortune is AUD 17.77 billion. He will not be on the list next year as his birthday is approaching soon. His business partner, Mike-Cannon Brookes could not make it to the list as he is over 40 years of age.

Next on the list are the soon to be married couple and co-founders of Canva, Cliff Obrecht and Melanie Perkins. Their combine fortune as per the rich list report is AUD 3.43 billion. The main reason for the increase in their fortune is the fact that Canva’s valuation has increased by AUD 8 billion.

The fourth position on the rich list is occupied by Nick Molnar of Afterpay who has a fortune of AUD 2.22 billion. Molnar was earlier appreciated for being the youngest self-made billionaire of Australia as the share price of his company also soared. The fifth spot on the rich list belongs to Cameron Adams, who is another co-founder of Canva.

In this year, 81% of the AUD 39.6 billion wealth that belongs to 100 people on the rich list owe their fortune to technology one way or the other. About 35 people on the list make their fortune from a software program while 13 make it from an online retail website. Eight of them make it from a financial technology application. Tech entrepreneurs make up more than half of the rich list for the first time.

The ongoing coronavirus pandemic has forced people to stick to their homes and use technology to stay connected with the world and do their jobs. So, the people in the rich list benefited from the increased use of technology. We are sure that many people who have read this article are now regretting not learning the code. We are on the same boat mates!
