Soon after announcing His Dark Materials, HBO is trying to unveil the hidden aspects of the megachurch industry by launching The Righteous Gemstones series that revolves around a megachurch, and its founding family. The family, as you might have guessed, is more interested in making money off Christ rather than promoting his teachings.

Jesse Gemstone (Danny McBride) is the eldest in the Gemstone family and will take over the reins from his father Eli (John Goodman). Jesse also has overeager siblings Kevin (Adam Devine) and Judy (Edi Patterson). Devine has nailed the character of a Millennial Christian-rock inspired pastor with ease. Each of the family members has land to call their own as the family owns a sprawling estate.

The storyline of The Righteous Gemstones Series is engaging enough as it’s loaded with concepts of corruption, classicism, and manipulation of religion. After a few episodes, things get complicated as there are attempted murders, break-ins, and a violent church feud. You start understanding the show, and its true intentions halfway through, and by this time, you are intrigued enough to know what will happen to each of the characters.

The Righteous Gemstones Series is no doubt going to be one of the smartest comedies that you ever watched thanks to the perfect performance of McBride. When McBride and Goodman are on screen together, you will forget to find any sins in the series. There is one thing we would like to highlight; the primary characters are so awesome that the characters on the periphery seem left out at times.

In essence, we would say that The Righteous Gemstones Series is a must-watch for people who want to experience a smart comedy that subtly exposes how people use religion for their own good.

Would you watch The Righteous Gemstones Series for its key characters and their clandestine plans in the name of religion?
