This year has been tough for bar owners who had to deal with empty bars and revenue loss due to the ongoing coronavirus crisis. So, it is the perfect time to appreciate the bars that serve quality drinks. It was done via the World’s 50 Best Bars Awards that were held virtually. Three Sydney bars made it to the top 50, and several appeared in the 51-100 list as well.

The list of best bars across the World included Maybe Sammy, a 1950s Vegas-inspired bar that held the 11th position. Last year, it stood at 43. Two other Sydney bars on the list were Cantina Ok! Which held the 28th position and hidden Bulletin Place that was at 39th position. All of these are located in Sydney’s CBD.

The number one spot in the list of best bars was occupied by the Connaught Bar of London, the second position went to Dante in New York, and the third went to The Clumsies in Athens. The 51-100 list of the best bars included 4 Australian bars. They were from Melbourne. Everleigh held the 73rd position, Byrdi was at 80, Above Board at 84 and Black Pearl held the 98th position.

The judges said this of Maybe Sammy “Each new visit to Maybe Sammy brings surprise. That surprise might arrive in the statuette form of a flamingo while you’re sipping on one of the best Martinis you’ve ever tasted (surreptitiously placed by a bartender when your back was turned).”

The bar also got the annual Michter’s Art of Hospitality Award. For those who are unaware, this award recognises just one bar across the globe where industry experts had declared that they received the single best hospitality experience during the voting period.

Europe had the strongest showing in the World’s 50 Best Bars Awards. It held 21 spots and eight of them were located in London. Asia had 15 places, while North and South America had ten spots. Australia had three spots while the Middle East just had one.
