Car giant Toyota always manages to catch the media’s attention, and it has done so again at the 2021 Shanghai Motor show. It has unveiled the first-ever all-electric car, the Toyota BZ4X Concept. It will be one of seven vehicles that are set to be introduced by the company by the end of 2025.

Toyota has been selling petrol-electric hybrid cars since 1997 and has sold over 17 million vehicles till now. It is the first time the company has launched a all-electric car. The BZ in the vehicle name stands for beyond zero emissions. The concept vehicle shows a modern SUV that is similar in size to the Toyota RAV4.

In an official statement, Toyota said that the company “will introduce the Toyota BZ4X battery electric vehicle to the Australian market, with timing to be confirmed closer to launch.” The exact launch date of the electric car in Australia was not announced. Still, the all-electric car will likely be introduced after 2022 as that is the year it will be introduced overseas.

The cost details of the Toyota BZ4X are still under wraps. But it will likely be costlier than the three cheapest electric car options available in Australia. The MG ZS EV is the cheapest of the lot at AUD 43,990, while the Hyundai Ioniq will cost about AUD 48,970 and Nissan Leaf will cost AUD 49,990.

Talking about the Toyota BZ4X, Sean Hanley, the Sales and Marketing Chief for Toyota in Australia, said, “Adding the first battery-electric vehicle to our range builds on our approach of providing a variety of powertrain options, while reducing emissions. Further ‘BZ’ series vehicles will be considered and introduced as appropriate for Australia in due course, expanding Toyota’s electrified vehicle choices.”

He also added that the carmaker promised to offer an “extensive range of vehicles, whilst recognising the different practical needs of Australian customers and geographies.” He also stated, “We will continue to evaluate the market in Australia and strive towards increasing to a powertrain mix that includes a form of electrification across our vehicle range by 2030, excluding GR and performance models.”

Toyota has pushed back the target of having a hybrid or electric version of every model by five years, from 2025 to 2030. The Japanese carmaker said it needs more time to develop advanced technology for vans, utes, and four-wheel-drives.
