Walt Disney Studios is planning to develop a sequel to its 2019 live-action blockbuster The Lion King, with the director of Moonlight, Barry Jenkins  the helm, according to reports. The reports also indicate that the film will continue using photo-realistic CGI technology introduced in Jon Favreau’s The Jungle Book, and although there were information on the production or release dates, the new The Lion King film is planned to feature the characters’ backgrounds and mythology and also feature Mufasa’s origin story.

In addition to that, the report also says that the origin story of Mufasa will be explored through flashbacks quite similar to The Godfather: Part II and that the film’s soundtrack will make audiences reminisce the 1994 original animated film, the 2019 live-action film, and the film’s Broadway stage counterpart. The new The Lion King live-action sequel will also serve as Jenkin’s second Disney film project, as he is also attached to direct the Alvin Ailey biopic for Searchlight.

“Helping my sister raise two young boys during the ’90s, I grew up with these characters,” Jenkins said in the interview. “Having the opportunity to work with Disney on expanding this magnificent tale of friendship, love, and legacy while furthering my work chronicling the lives and souls of folk within the African diaspora is a dream come true.”
