Murder Mystery is the Most Popular Title on Netflix for 2019
It beat Stranger Things, The Witcher and The Irishman

Murder Mystery has received the honour of being the most popular US release for 2019. The comedy movie beat some well-loved titles like Stranger Things 3, The Irishman, The Incredibles 2, The Witcher, Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile, The Highwaymen, The Umbrella Academy and The Triple Frontier. Murder Mystery, starring Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston beat even the popular Ryan Reynolds film, 6 Underground.
Murder Mystery topped the list of most popular US releases list of 2019, and it might upset the fans of The Irishman that was expected to be on the top of the list as it was watched by over 26 million accounts globally in its first week on the streaming service. The fans of When They See Us would be more disappointed as the critically acclaimed show didn’t even make a place on this list.
The creation of the list by Netflix was done unusually. It was based on the number of subscribers who watched the series or a movie for at least two minutes during the first 28 days after the release. Earlier, Netflix used to count customers who had watched 70 per cent of a single episode of a show or 70 per cent of a movie. The company changed this metric because it felt that 70 per cent measurement was discriminating against longer-form content.
Highlighting it, a spokesperson from Netflix said: “We used this metric because this is a ranking, so we’re looking for relativity rather than finite numbers.” The spokesperson added that this change in metric makes the two-minute measurement “a far more pure way to measure popularity.”

2019 was a successful year for Netflix, and the spokesperson acknowledged it by saying “We’re really happy to see just how well Netflix films generally did in 2019,”
Murder Mystery’s achievement is not a big surprise as it had Netflix’s biggest opening weekend ever in June as more than 30 million accounts watched it around the world. A sequel of the whodunit is in development too.
