When the Samsung Galaxy Fold Turned from a Dream to Nightmare

We suggest you read this before considering this flagship device.

Samsung Galaxy Fold display issues

The world of smartphones has moved into new horizons since Samsung Galaxy Fold was announced, a few weeks back. Within a few days to that date, Huawei Mate X and Motorola Razr were also announced. The result, most of us started thinking less of our phones and started dreaming of buying the Samsung Galaxy Fold or one of its competitors.

If you have placed the order for Samsung Galaxy Fold already, then we have some bad news for you, the phone has recently turned from a dream to a nightmare. A few reviewers who had gotten their hands on the device have reported that as soon as they peeled off the thin plastic layer that is attached to the phone, the device’s screen began to budge at the hinges or worse, the screen broke within a few hours/days.

We think there could be two reasons for this problem, either that the technology behind the phone is too flimsy and unreliable or the reviewers got models that were in the pre-production stage. The latter reason is more optimistic and might provide some hope to the folks who have already bought one Samsung Galaxy Fold that their device won’t die on them.

The electronics giant had the courtesy to address the problem publicly and released a statement in which it committed to fixing the problem by finding the real cause. It also suggested the future customers to not remove the plastic layer over the phone as it might lead to problems and promised that all the customers would be warned of that when they purchase the product.

But what to do if you seriously want to buy a Samsung Galaxy Fold or have pre-ordered it? If you haven’t ordered it yet, we suggest that you try the wait and watch approach and buy it after a few months when Samsung fixes the actual problem. If you have pre-ordered it, you can try not removing that plastic layer and using it cautiously. If it still gives you trouble (which some reviewers have reported even though they hadn’t removed the protective layer), it’s best to seek a refund.

We are also hoping that Samsung will release a more concrete statement by April 26, 2019, because that’s when the Samsung Galaxy Fold will officially go on sale. Keep checking this space as we’ll update it as soon as we know more.
