The world’s largest fried chicken fastfood chain,KFC, is already developing plans to make the world’s first lab-made chicken nuggets as part of its “restaurant of the future” concept. The American fast-food chain has been partnering with a Moscow-based firm named 3D Bioprinting Solutions for an environmentally-friendly KFC chicken nuggets alternative.

The KFC chicken nuggets will be developed using an additive printing technique with real chicken cells and plant material. With it, the two companies are hoping to imitate the same “taste and texture” of KFC chicken nuggets while cuts down the use of the actual animal. It’s worth noting that the 3D bioprinting process the company describes uses animal material, so the nuggets it will produce will not be vegetarian-friendly. It’s an eco-friendly solution that minimises the number of resources required to manufacture KFC chicken nuggets: the process will use 100 times less farmland and 25 times fewer greenhouse emissions. It could also be a healthier substitute because of its lack of chemical additives. The ingredients like bread and secret spices will still be included to deliver the KFC signature flavour.

The lab-made KFC chicken nuggets are planned to launch in Moscow later this year.
