As the coronavirus pandemic is not going away anytime soon, most of us have shifted to remote work and do it within the confines of our homes. If you want to go away from all this, then Bermuda is giving you a golden opportunity. The island is already one of the few countries that have opened the gates for all international visitors as long as they followed specific guidelines during the visit and tested negative for COVID-19. Now, it’s offering more.

As the country’s economy is on the verge of a crash due to lack of tourists, the government is offering one-year residencies to non-Bermudians who can do remote work, research or study on the island. The catch here is that you need to apply for a Residential Certificate on the government website before August 1, and it would cost you USD 263 or AUD 373.

The British Overseas Territory is ideal for people who are doing remote work these days as it has an efficient internet and phone infrastructure as compared to other tropical surroundings. It also has good medical facilities and has managed to contain the pandemic better than most nations.

People who are interested in doing remote work from Bermuda for a year must be over 18, have good character, and must supply proof of employment and health insurance. Students must be able to prove that they are enrolled in an undergraduate, graduate, research, or doctorate program. Those interested must also prove that they have sufficient means or a continuous source of annual income and have no need to seek employment in Bermuda.

Jason Hayward, Bermuda’s minister of Labour, said, “There are persons who are location-independent, using technology to perform their job no matter where they are. Such persons work remotely, telecommuting rather than being physically present at a company’s headquarters or office. Remote working has been a growing trend for some time and is something the Bermuda Government has been examining as part of its technology-focused economic diversification strategy.”

People who are doing remote work and are given this golden opportunity or might be given the same expressed their views about it on Twitter. As the coronavirus situation is still impacting most parts of the world, including the US, EU, Australia, and Asia, people who can afford the Bermuda stay see this opportunity as an unmissable one. Also, the international travel isn’t likely to be lifted soon (Qantas will likely cancel all international flights till March 2021), many people who are doing remote work could use the opportunity to work and have some fun at the same time in tropical surroundings.
