Dreams Do Come True: Pharrell Williams' Watch Proves That
Pharrell Williams x Richard Mille – RM52-05

Celebrities have the luxury of making their dreams come true, and Pharrell Williams proves that over and over again. A few days after he was in the news for Untitled (He designed Toronto condominiums), the rapper is grabbing attention again by creating a timepiece of his dreams.

When we say dreams, it’s in a very real sense. The singer has dreamt about a key feature of the design of the watch in his dream. As Pharrell Williams is a big fan of Star Trek, he dreamed of an astronaut on Mars who is gazing down upon the earth. This exact design is present on the dial of the watch. The cost of the watch is USD 969,000, which comes around to over AUD 1,428,000. It is created in collaboration with popular watchmaker Richard Mille. It is another big collab of the rapper this year after Human Race in which he collaborated with Adidas.

The watch is called RM 52-05 Tourbillon Pharrell Williams and is created by the songwriter who has always been fascinated and inspired by the cosmos. He is such a big fan of the Star Trek series that he named his record label as Star Trak. Pharrell Williams portrayed a view of the Earth in the same manner as it is reflected in the helmet visor of an astronaut who is standing on the Mars’ surface.

Talking about the timepiece, Pharrell Williams said “Creating is about shifting the perspective from which we look at things. That’s really the only difference, and with the RM 52-05, we’ve looked at Mars from a different angle, an unexpected first-person point of view.”

The helmet of the astronaut is sculpted in grade 5 titanium. It is also hand-painted by using a special extra-durable white paint. The Red Planet surroundings of the astronaut in Valles Marineris are reflected in the visor, and the Blue Earth is hovering above the horizon. The engraving of this scene requires about 15 hours per piece. After that, a full day is needed to for grand feu enamelling superimposing layers of pigment that are repeatedly fired at 850 degrees Celsius. It is done to achieve the colour gradients that vary from blue to black and orange to red.

Two diamonds are set on each side of the helmet, and black sapphires are used to represent cameras and floodlights. The Pharrell Williams watch’s bridges and plates are made of grade 5 titanium which is rigid, corrosion-resistant and is used in automobile, aerospace and aeronautics industries. The inserts are made with sparkly aventurine glass.

Only 30 pieces of Pharrell Williams will be created and will be available at Richard Mille boutiques worldwide.
