Facebook is beginning to implement a cross-platform messaging between Messenger chat and Instagram. Through a new app update, the company is subtly testing the new messaging system on select accounts, though the roll out demographics isn’t exactly clear yet.

According to sources, a new update screen with the message “There’s a New Way to Message on Instagram” appeared in Instagram’s mobile app, to which users were shown a new list of messaging features: “A new colorful look for your chats”, “React with any emoji”, “Swipe-to-reply to messages”, and the main update “Chat with friends who use Facebook”.

Once updated, Instagram’s regular DM icon at the top right corner will be replaced with the Messenger chat icon. However, it appears that the cross-messaging feature is not functional yet (in our case, the DM icon didn’t even change to the Messenger chat icon after the update.)

Earlier this year, Facebook announced its plans for integrating the messaging platforms of its popular apps and allow cross-messaging across Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp. Facebook was said that it is planning to enable users who were only on one of its apps to connect to other users of different Facebook apps. Mark Zuckerberg stated that he wants the new system to be encrypted end-to-end. By integrating the messaging feature of its most popular apps, Facebook may be able to directly compete with Apple’s iMessage.
