Apple TV+ has already launched and a handful of new shows since the launch of the streaming service. But Apple is not just making new shows TV+. They also have original films on the way, and next month will arrive the first major theatrical release, The Banker, from the tech giant.

The Banker is a true story after Anthony Mackie and Samuel L. Jackson (two of our Marvel superheroes) as two black businessmen creating a plan to subvert the racist system that prevents black families from moving into white neighbourhoods.

The first trailer has arrived, and with one of their first of many hoped-for theatrical releases, it would seem like Apple is hoping to get into the famed awards season. Watch the trailer below for The Banker.

This sounds like the kind of film that Oscar voters will patronize, particularly after they supported Green Book last year. Given the intriguing premise that is based on a true story, the trailer doesn’t really deliver a big dramatic punch. Stories of overcoming prejudice are a safe bet when it comes to season nominations, but it’s not a strong hook to put it on. This could easily turn out to be one of those movies that strive for social meaning but miss the mark. Even so, making such a play so early in their foray into creating movies and TV shows is rather a bold move for Apple.

The banker will be led by George Nolfi, best known for penning screenplays like The Bourne Ultimatum, The Adjustment Bureau, and Ocean’s Twelve (although don’t let the last one discourage you). Nia Long, Michael Harney, and Colm Meaney will join Jackson, Mackie, and Hoult.

The Banker will open in theatres on December 6, 2019, and sometime in January 2020 will arrive on Apple TV+.
