SAVE THE DATE - THE WEEKND WILL PERFORM IN A VIRTUAL TIKTOK CONCERT

The Weeknd is planning to make the most of Tiktok’s virtual stage as the rapper will be performing in an augmented reality concert that will be live-streamed. The singer announced his plans to deliver a new music experience on the 7th of August as he will perform songs in digital-avatar from his latest album, After Hours.

The event starring The Weeknd would be a collaboration between XO, AR Streaming company Wave, and Republic Records. It will be the first augmented reality concert by Tiktok. It would use audience interaction, 3D renderings, and picture in picture video to ensure the creation of an immersive and interactive livestream. All the users of Tiktok would be able to engage in the event in real-time.

The concert starring The Weeknd will raise money for a non-profit, Equal Justice, that supports racial equality. Fans would be able to donate directly in the app before and during the airing of the show. Tiktok will also contribute to the cause. It has also been decided that the proceeds from exclusive merchandise would also go towards charity.

The Weeknd has had a positive response from Tiktok users. His album After hours was a massive success on the platform. His No. 1 single Blinding Lights also got immensely popular and reached the top spot on Billboard Hot 100 after its success on Tiktok.

This event starring The Weeknd is a big event for Wave also. The company has done many other successful shows starring Tinashe and John Legend, but this event would be an accolade the company could boast about for years to come. It’s the first AR or VR event by Tiktok that has done at-home live streams with Megan Thee Stallion and Alicia Keys.

The AR event will premiere on August 7 at 8.30 PM ET (that’s 8 August at 10:30 AM here) and would air many times after that. It is a unique event, but it is not the first-time musicians are performing virtually. Fortnite and Marshmello have already organized similar events and gotten tens of millions of viewers.

The event starring The Weeknd is expected to be a huge success and might feature into Australia’s top Google searches in the future. The event would also be a boost for Tiktok as the company is working on enhancing its brand image before competitors like YouTube “Shorts” enter the market.
